Let me rephrase that. I’m not a distance runner.
I’ve always been an athletic person: I competed in power and speed sports such as track & field, volleyball, and tennis; I belonged to a professional Greek dancing group for 15 years; I participated in outdoor activities such as hiking; I attended group fitness classes constantly at the gym, etc. But I never had any desire to run long distances; nor did I think I would be any good.
So why, now in my late 20s, have I decided to start training for a half marathon?
Because I want to. And I know I can.
The physical activities you excel in have to do with your body type and what kind of muscles you have, often determined by genetics. But…you can actually train your muscles to behave the way you want them to, which is what I’m doing right now.
Back to my training. I started the Saturday before Thanksgiving and have followed a strict plan. And I’m incredibly proud of myself that I have not missed a run.
Sure, it’s hard. It’s not something I’m used to. I easily get myself out there, but then as I’m running, I start thinking, “Oh this hurts. Maybe I should walk. That’s okay. It said it was okay to walk. No I’m not going to walk. Suck it up. Keep going. You feel great. You can totally do this. But my legs want to stop. Just breathe.”
I always keep running. And I always feel fantastic when I’m done. I’m turning distance running into something I thought I could never do into something I do.
And that is what this is all about.
